The Scream

The Scream is a painting by Edvard Munch made in 1893. Through his journal he describes the inspiration for the work. He writes on how he was out on a sunset walk with his friends. Suddenly the clouds turned blood red and Edvard is consumed by a shock of anxiety as a scream is sensed shook throughout nature.

Edvard grew up surrounded by illness and the everlasting dread of a mental condition that ran in his family.

He studied at the Royal School of Art and Design. He was urged to paint on his own emotional and psychological state.

Importance:  An early depiction of awareness for mental health. The painting normalized the portrayal of emotions and how people display them. It's very brave for him to just display the best of himself but also the worst. These paintings acclimate people to imperfections and normality of them.
